TZM rods are fabricated from alloyed molybdenum that was produced by powder metallurgical process.
The sintered TZM rods get their highest density and required dimensions by rolling, forging, swaging and drawing.
If not specially required, TZM rods are supplied stress-free-annealed. The stress-free annealing diminishes the deformation stresses of the TZM rods, without breaking up the deformation texture and causing a striking decrease in hardness.
The oxide- and lubricating layers of the TZM rods were removed in a chemical or mechanical way. The surface of the TZM rod is in rolled, swaged or drawn condition.
TZM rod is either cut to the required length or supplied in random lengths.
All rods are inspected on internal cracks and surface defects. According to the diameter and the surface condition of the rod, a visual control, a color liquid penetrant test, ultrasonic test or an eddy current test are applied. A combination of the various testing methods is possible. Slight impressions-caused by the production method-can exist on the surface of forged or swaged rods. So far as they are not deeper as the permissible minimum dimension of the rods, the final inspection does not qualify these impressions as defects.
