Ganzhou is the birthplace of Chinese tungsten industry and is known as “world tungsten capital”.
In 1907, the German missionaries discovered tungsten mine in West Huashan, Dayu County. In 1914, people also found tungsten mine in Zhongshao, Chongyi County and Mount Daji, Quannan County in succsession and opened Chinese tungsten ore mining history.
After the foundation of new China, Ganzhou set up nine state-owned tungsten mines, 16 local state-owned tungsten mines and more than 20 collective pitheads. Ganzhou became tungsten raw material’s major place of origin for the whole nation and even the world. During that period of time, geological workers discovered 106 tungsten reserves of mining areas and accumulative total tungsten reserves were 1170000 tons. Tungsten reserves accounted for the second in China and high-quality wolframite reserves accounted for the first in our country, which accounted for 70% of Chinese total wolframite reserves and 60% of the world wolframite reserves with the same quality. So Ganzhou is also called “world tungsten capital”.
At 1950s end, it is tungsten exports that exchange for the entire country food and goods and played an irreplaceable role in that difficult times.
