HT-molybdenum is a molybdenum quality suitable for applications at very high temperatures (HT is the abbreviation for “high temperature”). Doping molybdenum with small additions of polassium silicate, as well as a strong direcionally accenluated deformation, together with heat treatment, makes molybdenum possible to raise the recrystallization temperature of pure molybdenum to approximately 1700℃. At the same time, the ductility of molybdenum is retained, even after complete recrystallization, due to the pronounced fibrous structure.
Strong deformation is a pre-requisite to obtain these typical HT properties and, consequently, the production of HT-molybdenum is limited to molybdenum wire, rod and sheet of certain dimensions. HT-molybdenum is an ideal material for all kinds of structural parts which must be resistant to shocks and vibrations, also after having been in operation at high temperatures, or after welding, when it will not lose its flexibility or deformation characteristic. Recrystallized HT-molybdenum has a longer transitional temperature from brittle to ductile state compared to pure molybdenum. As to its reaction to oxidation, corrosion and machining, as well as its physical properties, HT-molybdenum is very similar to pure standard molybdenum.
