Tungsten Basic Knowledge

In nature, tungsten occurs about as frequently as copper ( tungsten approx. 69 g/t in the earth crust, copper approx. 70 g/t).

It has a cubic, body-centered crystal lattice and a melting point of 3410 ℃-the highest of all metals.

The German name of the element, Wolfram, was originally the name of an ore which contained tungsten. This mineral, mostly an accompanying element in tin ores, interfered with the reduction of the tin and reduced the yield by larger slag formation. The medieval miners termed the unknown companion of the tin ores “Wolfram”, as it devoured the tin.

This mineral is now termed wolframite and the metal extracted from it “Wolfram”.

The name in use today in English as well as in the Latin language is tungsten, tungsteno, etc., which is derived from the Swedish “tungsten” (heavy stone).

The Spanish chemists and brothers Juan Jose and Fausto de Lhuquart who worked in Sweden, are considered the discoverers of tungsten.

Molybdenum and tungsten manufacturer-Zhengzhou Sanhui has been dealing in refractory metals for almost 25 years. Except tungsten, we also produce titanium, zirconium and other metal products.
