Strategic Role of Tungsten in Industry

The strategic role of tungsten in industry refects in the following aspects:

1. Tungsten carbide-base hard alloy tools.Tungsten carbide has high hardness, wear resistance and refractory quality. Tungsten carbide-base alloy usually contains 85%-95% of tungsten carbide and 5%-14% of cobalt. As cementing metal, cobalt is able to make alloys possess the necessary intensity. Tungsten carbide-base alloy is mainly used to machine some steel alloy, also including carbide of titanium, tantalum and niobium. All of these alloys are produced by powder metallurgical method. The cutting speed of carbide knife tools is far better than that of steel knife tools.

2. Tungsten can be applied as additive to produce special steel. Commonly used high speed steel contains 9%-24% of tungsten. Among alloy tool steels, tungsten steel contains 0.8%-1.2% of tungsten. chromium tungsten silicium steel contains 2%-2.7% of tungsten, chromium tungsten steel contains 2%-9% of tungsten. Chromium tungsten manganese steel contains 0.5%-1.6% of tungsten.
Metal containing tungsten steel can be used in the manufacture of various tools: such as drill, cutter, wire drawing die and other components.

3. Tungsten is able to be used as vacuum electrical lighting material. Tungsten wire, tungsten belt and other tungsten forging components are used in the production of electronic tube, radio electronics and X raytechnology. Tungsten is the best material for incandescent filament and spiral filament. High temperature (2200-2500 ℃) can ensure high luminous efficiency, and low evaporation rate of tungsten can ensure long service life of the filament. Tungsten filament can also be used to manufacture direct heating cathode and grid electrode of electronic tube,  negative electrode of high voltage rectifier.
