Molybdenum and the TZM alloy are available in the form of forging billets and bars.
Forging billets of arc-cast unalloyed molybdenum and TZM vary in size from 3.5 to 6 in. (90 to 150mm) diameter, they comprise recrystallized extrusions. The maximum room-temperature hardness for unalloyed molybdenum forging billets is 180HB, and the maximum hardness for TZM forging billets is 200HB. The billets have relatively coarse grains, and the grain flow is parallel to the axis of the billet.
When forging stock less than 3.5in. (90mm) diameter is required, rolled bars will be supplied. Bars are normally supplied in the stress-relieved condition; if they are required for forging, it will usually be advantageous to specify that they a\be supplied in the recrystallized condition.
The very large billets of TZM are usually forged on hammers or presses to convert them to dies for the isothermal forging of nickel-base superalloys.
