Degreasing
Trichlorethylene, perchlorethylene and similar solvents are suitable for degreasing. Safety regulations have to be observed!
Pickling
Highly oxidized TZM can be cleaned with molten caustic soda containing some sodium nitrite (NaNO2). The temperature of the melt amounts to 400-450℃ (673-723K). the parts to be cleaned should be dry to avoid dangerous sputtering.
The pickled parts are cooled and any remaining adhering melt remains is removed by rinsing with hot water, dipping into dilute hydrochloric acid and finally into hot ware again.
A simple surface cleaning treatment consists in dipping the parts into boiling 20% KOH solution for about 5 minutes.
Slightly oxidized TZM can be bright annealed at 700℃(973K) in hydrogen.
Surface roughening
TZM surfaces can be roughened by shot-blasting or similar treatment.
Electropolishing
TZM can be anodically polished in 80% sulphuric acid. The temperature of the electrolyte should come to about 50℃ (323K), and the current density to 10-15 A/dm2.
